National Hot Rods World Qualifier Aldershot Raceway 12th March 2023
BRILLIANT BILLY UNSTOPPABLE AT ALDERSHOT
National Hot Rods: The first English National Hot Rod World Qualifier of 2023 took place at Aldershot Raceway on Sunday the 12th of March, round eight of the 2022/2023 English series. The meeting proved fruitful for 2018 World Champion Billy Wood as he went undefeated throughout the afternoon. The entry was split into three groups and each group raced twice across the three heats, Wood being drawn in the first. The #305 Tigra worked through the pack from starting thirteenth to pass early leader Barry Limer for the win. In Wood’s absence from Heat Two, Carl Waller-Barrett left it late to steal the win by just 0.027 seconds. The Tigra drove around the outside of long-time leader Karl Baker’s Ginetta to pinch the win in a photo finish, the pair crossing the line side by side. Heat Three saw Wood back in action and he had fought his way up to second when a clash between Jason Kew, David Brooks and Joey Palmer forced a stoppage, which brought the Aldershot man onto leader Ivan Grayson’s tail for the restart. Grayson was reluctant to give up the inside line but Wood forced the Fiesta wide into the Aldershot bend and pulled away to victory. After converting pole position into the race lead, Wood was never headed in the 35-lap final to take home the John Butler Trophy. Three-time World Champion Robert McDonald followed him home in second and Aaron Dew’s Ginetta climbed up to third after passing Chris Haird’s Tigra in the closing stages.

2.0 Hot Rods: Local man Gavin Botfield steered his Peugeot 106 to the Hoosier Racing Tires series qualifying Final win, Ben Murray kept him honest in second. Booking the third spot on the podium was the twice heat-winning Nova of Chris Crane, who survived a first corner brush with Duane Peacock’s Saxo that allowed Botfield through into a lead he wouldn’t lose. A late tangle just behind the green Vauxhall between Lee Pepper and Jason ’Boxer Jack’ Jackson removed the pair from contention, with Scott Morgan gifted fourth place as a result.
